A practice of sustained attention
The purpose of this website is not to replace meditation, but to serve as a tool to help develop concentration in the initial stages of concentration meditation. Allow the mind to unify with the object. Once you feel ready, return to your desired practice and object of meditation.
Set aside a quiet environment, free from distractions, and make yourself comfortable. It’s recommended to start with default settings, then adjust as you see fit.
How this exercise works: Simple shapes appear one at a time. Your goal is to notice when a shape is the same as the one before it, then press the space bar. As you use this meditation tool, relax any tension that may come up. Relax your mind and drop into flow.
This is an app for cultivating sustained attention — the ability to remain gently present with what is happening right now, moment after moment.
One at a time, simple shapes will appear at its center: a red circle, a red square, a blue circle, or a blue square. Each shape remains for a few moments, then disappears. After a brief stillness, another appears.
Your practice is this: watch each shape with relaxed, open attention. If a shape is exactly the same as the one before it — the same color and the same form — press the space bar once. If it is different, do nothing; simply observe it and let it pass. Noting the color and shape that appears can be helpful by silently saying to one’s self the color and shape.
When the mind wanders, calmly and gently bring it back to the present moment and observing.
When the time you have chosen has passed, a soft bell will ring (if enabled).
If you enable the adaptive pace option, the rhythm of the shapes will gently quicken while your attention holds steady — up to the limit you choose — and ease back whenever it falters.
If you need to step away, press the Escape key at any time to pause. You may then return to the meditation or to the main menu.
Sit comfortably, soften your gaze, and begin when you are ready.
